Hannah Hoch Research

Hannah Höch was born Anna Therese Johanne Höch in Gotha, Germany. In 1912 she began classes at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin under the guidance of glass designer Harold Bergen. She chose the curriculum glass design and graphic arts, rather than fine arts, to please her father.[ In 1914, at the start of World War I, she left the school and returned home to Gotha to work with the Red Cross.[4] In 1915 she returned to school, entering the graphics class of Emil Orlik at the National Institute of the Museum of Arts and Crafts. Also in 1915, Höch began an influential friendship with Raoul Hausmann, a member of the Berlin Dada movement. Höch's involvement with the Berlin Dadaists began in earnest in 1917. After her schooling, she worked in the handicrafts department for Ullstein Verlag (The Ullstein Press), designing dress and embroidery patterns for Die Dame (The Lady) and Die Praktische Berlinerin (The Practical Berlin Woman). The influence of this early work and training can be seen in her later work involving references to dress patterns and textiles. From 1926 to 1929 she lived and worked in the Netherlands. Höch made many influential friendships over the years, with Kurt Schwitters and Piet Mondrian among others. Höch, along with Hausmann, was one of the first pioneers of the art form that would come to be known as photomontage.

4th Plinth Work Diary

Today we were given the task to take a photo of any given object, and place it in another photo of our own. Sometimes it  may not belong there, or it will look odd. That is the while loin tot the 4th plinth.

In order to create a 4th plinth image, I decided to photograph an image of my shoe. This specific shoe was big and hefty giving it a better robust look. MY other image is a photograph I took of back alley on an abandoned building. The two do not fit in with each other because most people would question why a random shoe was there, however, it also goes because you would expect to see someone wearing shoes, especially in that environment.

I used a quick selection tool to cut the background out of the boot. I needed to do this otherwise the beige background will be on the image of the alley. I found it rather difficult as I had lots of curves and little ins and outs, I had to mask it and paint in reed on the section I did not want, I also had to use the magic wand to get into grooves and corners. I also added new layers

This is my final image. I think it looks okay. I defiantly think it could have gone better. Next time I would like to try and create it reversed. To put the landscape into the shoe instead. Overall I am happy with my result as a first time try.

Landscape Work Diary

In this lesson we were asked to take landscapes. However the day was very windy so I struggled to keep the tripod up right. I decided since my photos came out mostly dull and/or shaky, I would re-take them in my own time.

I didn't find landscape to be a hugely interesting topic for me, I did however like the ending product of my photos.

I like this photo because I feel like it shows a gloomy side of landscapes. Typically, landscapes are beautiful open scenery but this is closed in and dark. I like the contrast between the only slight sun set between the trees and the dark settings around.

I did not like this photo:

I didn't like this photo very much. the reason being was it was quite blurry and didn't seem to represent landscapes that much in my opinion. It may be because the side of the window cut half the picture off making it more into portrait mode.

Progression

Next time i would like to try and do some typical landscapes, or take landscapes with a reoccurring theme such as a woman doing the same pose in every photo. I feel like it would mean a to more to have a theme within the photos.

Rut Blees Luxemburg Research

Rut Blees Luxemburg is a German photographer. Her technique is to take photographs at night, mostly exploring the urban landscape. She is a Tutor at the Royal College of Art.

Her photograph, "Towering Inferno" was used as the cover art for The Streets' debut album Original Pirate Material. The photo depicts the beauty of a lit up council tower block. She also contributed "A Modern Project" for use as the cover of Bloc Party's second album, A Weekend in the City.

Rut Blees Luxemburg is a German photographer who studied photography at London College of Communication and gained her last formal education at the University of Westminster. Luxemburg’s technique is to take photographs at night, mostly exploring the urban landscape. Employing long exposures allows her to use the light emanating from the street only, for instance from office blocks or street lights.

Ansel Adams Research

Ansel Easton Adams was an American photographer and environmentalist. His black-and-white landscape photographs of the American West, especially Yosemite National Park, have been widely reproduced on calendars, posters, and books.

'you don't take a photograph, you make it.
When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.
There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.'

 Zone System

The Zone System is a technique that was formulated by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer back in the 1930's. It is an approach to a standardized way of working that guarantees a correct exposure in every situation, even in the trickiest lighting conditions such as back lighting, extreme difference between light and shadow areas of a scene, and many similar conditions that are most likely going to throw off your camera's metering giving you a completely incorrect exposure.

it allows you to:

  • Capturing a correct exposure every time, even in the trickiest light or scene situations.
  • Having a precise evaluation of your scene's tones and dynamic range prior to even making a shot.
  • Knowing when you need to use graduated neutral density filters.
  • Knowing exactly how far apart to take exposure bracketed shots for later blending.
  • Determining the situations where you need to use a fill flash to get a correct exposure.

Pre-visualisation

There are many assumptions that have been developed around this misunderstood word. Unfortunately, much of this confusion is not helped by special interest groups using the term and construing its meaning to something quite foreign from its original definition.

The three most common assumptions associated with previsualization are: it is used exclusively in the motion picture industry; it is used exclusively for designing visual effects; it is primarily three-dimensional animation. Of course, all of these definitions are incorrect, what is really is, is the mental or written plan for what you will create.

Group f64

Group f/64 was a group of seven 20th-century San Francisco photographers who shared a common photographic style characterized by sharp-focused and carefully framed images seen through a particularly Western (U.S.) viewpoint. In part, they formed in opposition to the Pictorialist photographic style that had dominated much of the early 20th century, but moreover they wanted to promote a new Modernist aesthetic that was based on precisely exposed images of natural forms and found objects.

This photograph reminds me of christmas, pine cones are always used as christmas decorations and made to smell nice. They also remind me of being a child and finding them in the parks, just like conquers, everyone would try and find the most, the smallest or biggest one. The denotations of this image appear to be a black and white effect, using possibly an IV zone.

This photograph screams procrastination to me. It feels very sad, lonely and quiet. There isn't much going on, everything is very simple. \there is only an elder man siting there reading over files/newspapers. IT crates a sense of loss and longing. The denotations used would be a sepia effect and possibly VIII zone.

This photograph has the connotations of this photograph to me are words such as serendipity, serene and tranquil. It feels like the kind of place I wouldn't mind sitting and reading. The denotations of this photograph would be a black and white effect with a possible II zone.

My Life Documentary Work Diary

Over the christmas holidays we were given the task to document our lives. I knew that I was gong to be very busy with work, with trying to catch up with old friends, revising for other subjects and preparing for christmas. So I decided that I would take photos when it was convenient. I didn't need a scheduled plan that I could possibly forget. I'll take a photo when I see something that fits into an aspect of my life.

I had a some pictures that there were two of but different angles and edits. One of these was a pink Buddha night light. It may seem silly that at 16, almost 17 I still need a night light to sleep. However, not everything is so simple, sometimes there are back stories to things, reasons for why people behave the way they do, explanations for the unordinary. I'm not going to delve into why I need a night light, but it does mean something more than a simple weird trait. I liked this image the most out of the two because I like the way the surrounding space is negative however it has a pink tinge to it. It feels relaxing and calming, exactly what a night light is suppose to do.

Another photo that I really liked was the book. I really like this photo because it is a true reflection on me. I am almost always, constantly reading. There is not really a day I haven't read something. The concept of reading can seem boring and dull however, I like words. I like how they are so beautifully dangerous, how they can make or break a person. Even when people say 'sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me' it just isn't true. I think the purpose of this photo was to show a few words in detail, words that do not make sense, words that seem harmless, but then what about all those blurred ones? The ones we cover, we put to the back of our heads; what about the ones covered and obstructed by the ear phones. Just because it is covered doesn't mean they're not there.

Overall, I am quite happy with the way my 'Documentary' turned out. I like the way my photos let you see into my own private life, I like the way they express me and the different perceptions that can be taken from them. The photos themselves express different things for different people. I played around with aperture, shutter speed and exposure a lot. I like using depth of field photography a lot too.

Progression

If I were allowed to re-do this project, I think it would be cool to try a different view. Some people in my class did things like taking a photo at exactly the same time for a number of days, or photoshopping their day into the outline of the top they wore that day. I think i'd like to go strategic and/or creative instead of hidden meanings next time. I think it would be cool as it would offer a completely different perspective of my life

I like this coffee cup image that I found because it sows creativity (pattern made) in something simplistic and I like the way the city is framed from the circles window in the second image.

Composite/ Manipulated Final Images

In this photo I have chosen to take the Yin and Yang sign, The black side (Yin) is known as negativity and sinister. To further represent the myth, I photoshopped a red evil eye into the black side. On the other hand, Yang (the white side) represents positivity and purity, To represent this, I found an image of an eye that looked a little like the earth; blue and green colours swirl together. I think the earth represents yang well as its life itself.
I used an old photograph of the London bombings in WW2,  I then found an image n an old stopwatch and placed it in the corner of the photo. The idea here was the ticking, waiting for the bomb to drop from the bomb plane.

Here is a landscape photograph of paris, I then used photoshop to put the Leaning tower of Pisa next to the eiffel tower. There was no hidden meaning other than a monument of rome being in paris.

Composite / Manipulated Image

    Fashion industry
Photo manipulation is a process to transform a photograph into a desired image. There are currently many different software applications to choose from ranging from professional applications to basic imaging software for the casual user.

In my opinion, photo manipulation is both good and bad. I think it can be good because it allows people to make an image how they envisioned it. They are able to adjust certain aspects of photos they do not like or just to simply improve them. However, editing can be done to such extremes that it creates a false pretences for both men and worn in the Media. It does however influence young girls attitude towards themselves and others. I can make people feel degraded and faulty.
