Composite Work Diary

In this lesson we were assigned to cary out the task of creating false images. Being able to put two images together to create one hat looks real. I found this quite hard as my computer skills are not that great. I did produce some however, they are no the best.

I used an old photograph of the London bombings in WW2,  I then found an image of an old stopwatch and placed it in the corner of the photo. The idea here was the ticking, waiting for the bomb to drop from the plane onto the city. I like the way the themes fir together and the way that the stopwatch bring some colour into it even though it is faded.

I did not like this photo that much as I feel the idea did not work. I tried to put an evil eye on the darker side of the peace symbol and an earth eye on the whiter side. However, I could not find the right images to put there and couldn't get it to be just a circled photograph.

I would like to try using my own photos and try to gather more ideas if I were to redo this task.

4th Plinth Work Diary

Today we were given the task to take a photo of any given object, and place it in another photo of our own. Sometimes it  may not belong there, or it will look odd. That is the while loin tot the 4th plinth.

In order to create a 4th plinth image, I decided to photograph an image of my shoe. This specific shoe was big and hefty giving it a better robust look. MY other image is a photograph I took of back alley on an abandoned building. The two do not fit in with each other because most people would question why a random shoe was there, however, it also goes because you would expect to see someone wearing shoes, especially in that environment.

I used a quick selection tool to cut the background out of the boot. I needed to do this otherwise the beige background will be on the image of the alley. I found it rather difficult as I had lots of curves and little ins and outs, I had to mask it and paint in reed on the section I did not want, I also had to use the magic wand to get into grooves and corners. I also added new layers 

This is my final image. I think it looks okay. I defiantly think it could have gone better. Next time I would like to try and create it reversed. To put the landscape into the shoe instead. Overall I am happy with my result as a first time try.

Landscape Work Diary

In this lesson we were asked to take landscapes. However the day was very windy so I struggled to keep the tripod up right. I decided since my photos came out mostly dull and/or shaky, I would re-take them in my own time.

I didn't find landscape to be a hugely interesting topic for me, I did however like the ending product of my photos.

I like this photo because I feel like it shows a gloomy side of landscapes. Typically, landscapes are beautiful open scenery but this is closed in and dark. I like the contrast between the only slight sun set between the trees and the dark settings around.

I did not like this photo:

I didn't like this photo very much. the reason being was it was quite blurry and didn't seem to represent landscapes that much in my opinion. It may be because the side of the window cut half the picture off making it more into portrait mode.

Progression

Next time i would like to try and do some typical landscapes, or take landscapes with a reoccurring theme such as a woman doing the same pose in every photo. I feel like it would mean a to more to have a theme within the photos.

My Life Documentary Work Diary

Over the christmas holidays we were given the task to document our lives. I knew that I was gong to be very busy with work, with trying to catch up with old friends, revising for other subjects and preparing for christmas. So I decided that I would take photos when it was convenient. I didn't need a scheduled plan that I could possibly forget. I'll take a photo when I see something that fits into an aspect of my life.

I had a some pictures that there were two of but different angles and edits. One of these was a pink Buddha night light. It may seem silly that at 16, almost 17 I still need a night light to sleep. However, not everything is so simple, sometimes there are back stories to things, reasons for why people behave the way they do, explanations for the unordinary. I'm not going to delve into why I need a night light, but it does mean something more than a simple weird trait. I liked this image the most out of the two because I like the way the surrounding space is negative however it has a pink tinge to it. It feels relaxing and calming, exactly what a night light is suppose to do. 

Another photo that I really liked was the book. I really like this photo because it is a true reflection on me. I am almost always, constantly reading. There is not really a day I haven't read something. The concept of reading can seem boring and dull however, I like words. I like how they are so beautifully dangerous, how they can make or break a person. Even when people say 'sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me' it just isn't true. I think the purpose of this photo was to show a few words in detail, words that do not make sense, words that seem harmless, but then what about all those blurred ones? The ones we cover, we put to the back of our heads; what about the ones covered and obstructed by the ear phones. Just because it is covered doesn't mean they're not there.

Overall, I am quite happy with the way my 'Documentary' turned out. I like the way my photos let you see into my own private life, I like the way they express me and the different perceptions that can be taken from them. The photos themselves express different things for different people. I played around with aperture, shutter speed and exposure a lot. I like using depth of field photography a lot too.

Progression

If I were allowed to re-do this project, I think it would be cool to try a different view. Some people in my class did things like taking a photo at exactly the same time for a number of days, or photoshopping their day into the outline of the top they wore that day. I think i'd like to go strategic and/or creative instead of hidden meanings next time. I think it would be cool as it would offer a completely different perspective of my life

I like this coffee cup image that I found because it sows creativity (pattern made) in something simplistic and I like the way the city is framed from the circles window in the second image. 

     

Low Key Lighting TE Work Diary

In this lesson we were given the task of taking portraiture photographs using Low Key Lighting. We used a shutter speed of 1/125, F-stop 16 ad ISO 200.

As previously said, I really enjoy human photography, I like to be able to explore the vulnerability, the purity and innocence of it all. Sometimes those aspects cannot be displayed, however, in this portraiture lesson I found themes of distance, natural beauty and hidden emotions.

In order to take this photos we were given the ask to set the studio up. Here is a photo of the setup:

I really liked this photo because it is deadpanned. Her eyes are sharp, focused. To me, it looks like she is trying to tell me something; she is trying to convey an emotion that words couldn't possibly do justice, yet I am to find out which emotion that is. 

I think the edited version is much better, I lightened it up a little bit just so you can see her face a little clearer. I made it black and white because I think that portrays purity a little more.

Unfortunately, I did not like this photo:

The reason I did not like this photo is because the girl is half blinking. I also do not like the lighting in this. Because of the bad lighting and blinking it makes the photo looks unprepared and disorganised. To me, looking at the photo makes me a little nervous, I can just keep picking imperfections out which I should not be able to do. The girl in the photo, is pretty no doubt, however she herself looks too caught of guard.

Progression

Next time, I would like to experiment with using more than one person at a time, maybe making the shots a little more fun rather than just being deadpanned or sad emotions. I would also like to try and explore innocence and human form more, however I know this would be hard to do since most people are not comfortable in their own bodies, and it would not be appropriate to shoot in college. This would have to be an out of class project.

Portraiture Location Work Dary

In todays lesson we were asked to take another shoot of portraiture, however this time it was Location.
We went around campus finding some places that would look as good backgrounds.
I like taking portraiture photographs since I enjoy capturing peoples raw emotions, or even faked. Portraiture is a theme of human photography and thus being my favourite type of photography.

Here is a photo I liked:

I like this photo because It seems as if the girl Is almost smiling but not quite. Her eyes are directed straight into the camera giving it the effect that she is looking you straight in the eyes. I think the photo shows an underlying quirkiness; it shows a girl trying to be serious but evidently finding the situation funny.

I do not like this photo:

I do not like this photo because I feel like it is lacking in any significant emotion or focus. I think the centre point if the image is her nose which isn't a bodily part that displays anything worth mentioning. I think the photo would be better if the camera was a little more keel with her head, however, since the girl was a lot taller than me it was difficult to get the heigh and levels right.

Progression

Next time I think I would like to stick to a themed background with a lot of different people to vary. I would like to do it with a field in the background, however, I would like to do it with other people busy in the background - not just a clean cut image. I would also like to change the way most of my expressions are in the photos. I would like to do it naturally rather than telling the person; making hem laugh, telling them an in depth story, capturing them when they don't even realise.

This is my step-by-step editing of a portraiture photography and the final effect.

Portraiture Work Diary

In todays lesson, we were given the task to take portrait photos. I found this lesson quite fun since my favourite type of photography is juan photography. We used Fstop 8 and 13, ISO 200 and shutter speed was at 1/125 of a second.

It was hard to find the absolute best lighting and to also get the exact emotion to be portrayed. However It was easier when I used my friend  because we are comfortable with each other.

Here is a photo I liked

I really like this photo because I think it shows a lot of personality and playfulness. You can clearly see her emotions; she is happy, having fun. This portrait shot was from the hips and up, although it didn't quite get her hips in the photo it is still valid. I think the photo conveys happiness very well.

I did not like this photo

I didn't like tho photo because it was in the middle of a conversation. My friend was not consciously aware of her actions, whilst it had the potential to be good photo it came out not as good. However, her emotions are displayed quite well. She looks as if someone has just said something she doesn't agree with or finds stupid.

Joiners Work Diary

In this lesson we were given the task to create a joiner. I find the concept of joiners very interesting. I think it is beautiful way to express yourself and/or create slash manipulate objects. We perceive things as one thing, however evidently, we can manipulate faces to create a seemingly normal face. I find it fascinating  that we can put together different images and it pass as one thing.

We were given the opportunity to take multiple photos of a portrait to make our own joiner.

These photos give me the perfect opportunity to manipulate facial features. I like the first one a lot because she is semi smiling. She looks naturally beautiful. The second I also like because you can clearly see her looking straight but out of focus.

Progression

Next time I think I would take more photos so that I could make the joiner wider rather than having to overlap closeups as it distorts the face creating a funny effect.

I would also like to take more varied angle photos, it may be nice to have a background rather than just a plain one. However with the plain background it did make it easier to blend the two side facing pictures.

Depth Work Diary

In todays lesson we carried on with  depth. We had the opportunity to go into town instead of staying in the studio & take some photos.
I found it hard to find things around that had any meaning of depth to me personally, or that ha depth within itself. However I managed to find a few things that I liked.

Here is a photo I liked

I really like this photo because you can see the cracks in the road. You can see the turmoil and ups and downs. You can see different components that make up the ground we walk on.

My edited version has the theme of blue specks and blue blurred backgrounds.

Here is a photo I did not like.

I do not like this photo because the view seems dull and unappealing. I also do not like it because you cans ee the flash reflection in the automatic doors. 

Whilst doing depth, as I mentioned earlier, you can find depth in something personal to you. Something, or in this case someone personal to me was with me whilst taking photos. A friend of mine was taking a photo of something and whilst I watched her do this, I thought she looked naturally in her set. So I took  candid photo - this was suppose to be just for her but then I found that I actually quite liked them. I then had the idea of the quote "A masterpiece taking a photo of art." I decided that if I could, I would photoshop her into seemingly taking a photo of art or something aesthetically pleasing. Here are my results:

This first one, I photoshopped my friend into sitting at the end of the pier taking a photo of the sun or water. I liked the idea but it was harder to put into real life. I think it would be better if she blended in a little more.

This was another attempt at placing her inside a temple sort of building I think it works quite well, it genuinely looks like she is sitting down, however I think her body proportion needed to have been a little bigger.







Lastly, this is the same as above, however I noticed after that the shadows caste would have put her shadow on the ground also. So I manipulated the figure into looking dark and washed into the ground, It was hard trying to find where the shadow would actually have been caste, however I think it turned out okay. I would have liked the shadow to be blank with no detail but that was hard to do.

Depth Of Field TE Work Diary

In todays lesson we were assigned the task to take pictures with Depth of field and wide depth of field. We done this in the studio using objects and students as our focus.
I had trouble with my camera as it kept failing to focus, so in the end I had to borrow one of my friends and take the photos. It was hard to try and get the right focus however I did enjoy it.
I found it difficult to grasp the different depth of field concepts at first but after going over it, it was ok.

Here is a photo I liked.

I like this photo because the main focus is the eyes and tip of the camera. I find that not the whole face nor the whole camera is in focus but, rather half and half. We are looking at two different things combining instead of one simple.

To do this, I selected around the body, going into hue & saturation. Then i clicked Colourise, then started to mess around with the levels.

Here is a photo I did not like.

I did not like this photo because the Image is completely out of focus. Neither camera or girl is in focus.

Progression

Next time I think I would like to try using more creative inspirations. My favourite type of photography is defiantly taking photos of people. I like the natural beauty we hold and how we can be o oblivious to our beauty. I would like to go somewhere that has simple but beautiful backgrounds allowing my soul focus to be on the person I am capturing.
I will also need to understand Aperture and Fstop more. In order to understand I will revise it over.
