Line Work Diary

During the lesson on Tuesdays the 8th of September 2015, we were assigned a task which entailed the job to represent images of the theme Line. There is line in everything we see but I found that it was harder to find creative lines.

Here is a photo i liked

I like this photo because it clearly shows line in various ways. The first would be the the pencils are in a 'line' whilst one pencil on its own also has curved lines. Also the shaven part has lines meeting from the plastic to the lead. I think the focus is good and the colours are bright. They stand out well against the brown wooden floors.

I did not like this photo

I tried to demonstrate lines being in things we least expect, how they can be curved and patterned. However i feel like the front circle should also be in focus. I would also like to erase the background noise to the right of the image.

Progression

If i were given the opportunity to shoot Line again i would have liked to have used human form, maybe experiment in colours a little more and be more abstract. I would also like to work on my focus and background noise. Here are some examples of inspiration.

Line Straight Iamges

The reason this picture of the pencils in a 'line' is one of my top five, is that it represents lines in more than one way. firstly i have the line of pencils then the individual pencils are a line themselves. I also have the lines in shaven part which leads to the lead. the leopard print design is formed of curved lines plus the wooden flooring has lines.
the picture is focused at the beginning and then looses focus on the outer edges.

This image was a picture I took of the sun. It was more of a play around that I hadn't intended to rely use but when i looked at the image once is was processed onto the computers; i found that the suns ray created a circle/ full curved line around itself almost like a protection shield. the sun in the middle had rays coming out to meet the circumference of the curved line, it gives a north star effect.

This picture is of a plant. the leave son the plant all grow in a vertical direction showing obvious lines.
i took the picture from an angled birds eye view as if you were sliding down the leaf itself.

This picture of the book demonstrated lines within the letters. all letters are made up of curved lines, horitontal, diagonal, all types of lines.
the other lines are shown in the structure of the writing, the amount of words, sentences along one 'line'.

The picture of the flower shows curved lines and an aesthetically pleasing view.

Line Image Bank

This photo is a black and white image of a zebra crossing. the white lines are cracked showing the oldness of the road. all the lines lead in the same way, they are vertical which represents strength. I suppose a zebra crossing could be strength as it controls traffic, it allows a human to safely cross.

This picture of the pier and water, also sunset sets an aura of tranquility and serendipity.  the pier walk seems to fade into a none existent space, it creates a look of an image that you can genuinely walk through\ put your hand through. there are many different lines within the is picture, they go in all different directions showing that it captures many different meanings.

The trees here are stood tall and vertical, (meaning strength and power)  the dark colour theme gives off a hardened mind set. It can be sad, lonely theme. it feels like a place someone would be procrastinating alone.

This type of photo is quite common. The waves, musky sky gives off the tranquility of the whole scenery. A woman, is sitting at the edge of a presumed cliff whilst reading. It feel likes a whole 'nother reality. The famous question is always asked 'if you were alone on a island and could only take one book, what book would you take?' applies well.

This image is the roof of a building, the roof allows natural light through whilst forming a sort of flower/henna design. it seems quite touristic whilst al the lines finally form into the centre piece.

Line Definitions

Horizontal line -

  • There’s something about a horizontal line in an image that conveys a message of ‘stability’ or even ‘rest’. Horizons, fallen trees, oceans, sleeping people – all of these subjects have something about them that speaks either of permanency and timelessness or rest.

vertical line -
  • Vertical lines have the ability to convey a variety of different moods in a photograph ranging from power and strength (think of skyscrapers) to growth (think of trees).

Diagonal line -
  • Diagonal lines generally work well to draw the eye of an image’s viewer through the photograph. They create points of interest as they intersect with other lines and often give images depth by suggesting perspective.

Curves -
  • Curves make an image easy to look at by leading the viewer’s eye through the frame. It is almost as if the photographer takes the viewer by the hand, draws them into the landscape, and points the way. The viewer’s eyes are compelled to follow the line.

Leading lines -
  • A leading line paves an easy path for the eye to follow through different elements of a photo. Usually they start at the bottom of the frame and guide the eye upwards and inwards, from the foreground of the image to the background, typically leading toward the main subject.
