Reflection Studio Work Diary

I like this photo

I do not like this photo

Reflection Straight Images

I like this photo because it shows two reflections yet it is obstructed by opaque objects. The obfuscation is in our view, It's like you can see me, but can you really see me?

Although the photo is out of focus I quite like it. I think it gives a sight of someone who would be drunk or high. It shows an insight of mind. Whilst there are three students visibly seen in a classroom, its almost like looking inside their heads.

I also like this photo because you can see everyone taking a photo of the reflections. We are all doing the same thing but in different ways, places and styles.

My reasoning for liking this photo is more of a metaphorical sense. In the photo I am pressing the button allowing the elevator doors to stay open. If I let the button go, the two girls in the background, would be out of sight, out of focus. I am holding the button as to who is presented with me.

I really like this photo because you are seeing a picture through a reflection of a wing mirror. You can see the beauty of the fall tree yet they are barricaded by fences.

Reflection Work Diary

In todays lesson we were asked to take pictures of Reflection. I think reflection has a basic understanding however I found that after a while it begins to get very repetitive with the limited sources i had.
I would like to explore reflection more, with studio equipment if given the opportunity. I would also like to manipulate reflections using photoshop if ii can.

From todays lesson:

Here is a photo I liked
I like this image because you can clearly see the mirror is my source of reflection, my focus was the silver sparkly pot but the center of the image became the side of the pot in the mirror. I also like the fact that you can see the camera illumining the out and can see the camera in the mirror. I think it shows reflection manipulation very well. I also like that the colours all compliment each other really well. White, silver and black is a classic combination.

I did not like this photo
I think that this photo went wrong because the flash was too close to the mirror meaning the entire mirror was covered by light. Also the focus isnt very well and background should be blurred.
If the mirror was center focus it may have come out better. I would also like for the tags and prices not to be in the photo as it makes it seem a little 'tacky'

Progression

Next time I am going to try and be more creative & possibly get the chance to use photoshop to edit and create a good image. I still think that a big thing for me is learning to use the focus/blur on my camera.
If i shoot in the studio for reflection i will being in some objects as well as trying to use human form.
Here are some photos i would like to re-create.

I also like the fact that you can see the camera illumining the out and can see the camera in the mirror. I think it shows reflection manipulation very well.

I also like this picture; it was an action shot of me and a friend walking,  i like the fat that it is slightly blurred. It gives off a candid feel. You can also see through the windows of the reflection.

This photo was taken in a glass/mirrored wall. I again really like that it is blurred with a redy pink outline to my hair. I think that the reflection captured the picture well.

In this photo you can see the reflection of my hair and hand in the murky ponds. I feel like it shows a different aspect of reflection since we are only seeing the outline and then everything chalked into rather than detail.

Finally I like this one because the focus is unclear but the center spot is right, You have a visual representation of the rule of thirds, We are all doing the same thing whilst the repetition of  3D/blurry effects has been kept.

Reflection Image Bank

I liked this image because you can see the untainted sky and moon, it has different colours creating a calming mood, and then when reflected into the ocean, it is distorted, jagged an dun perfect. Like a perfect vs flawed world.

This image is seen as a wine glass file with presumably white wine to the sky. Through the liquid, and he glass you can still see the blurred, smudged sky. Through different lenses everything is different. It is manipulation of vision.

Here there is  a bubble. Said bubble is being held up by a red pointer hand. In the reflection of the bubble you can see windows having a rainbow affect due to the mix of liquid and light. you can also see the persons reflection and camera taking the shot.

I really like this photo because straight away the mirror planted in the middle of the sea has been manipulated in many different ways. the reflection of the see is there, we can see a side we would have been able to see. But it also fills in for the part where the see is covered from the mirror. It has a sense of tranquility around it.

This picture shows a male and female standing presumably close to each other, probably hugging, however it only shows their legs. We however do get to see their whole body in the reflection of the puddle. I think this is clever because at first the image can be interpreted in different ways but then you see the truth anyways.

Reflection Definition

Reflection is the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.

To me, Reflection is the way we can manipulate our sight, light, heat or sound. The way perceive things different, a reflection is never really true to the original.

Frame is a rigid structure that surrounds something such as a picture, door, or windowpane.

Vivian Maier Research

In my own view this picture could be considered art; the logic that she essentially could be inside someone else's space - their private doings, almost like being in someones mind. She is looking into someone else's life through guarded walls, hooded eyes - in this case the window.
The houses behind are like a past looming behind, everywhere she goes. Even if she is looking forward, she will always see her past, whats behind her when looking into reflections.
To me it is art, to me I see a woman looking forward into new, things, finding their self in new peoples lives. Despite this, her past, her background will always be there, it'll always be with her.

Vivian Dorothy Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer. Maier worked for about forty years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore pursuing photography during her spare time. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide.

"She was a Socialist, a Feminist, a movie critic, and a tell-it-like-it-is type of person. She learned English by going to theaters, which she loved. ... She was constantly taking pictures, which she didn't show anyone" I think this reported description of Vivian says a lot. She was a feminist, standing up for womens equal rights, showing that she has as much worth as any man that passes by, I fee like this woman would be inspirational, confident and sure of herself. I think the fact that she includes herself in her pictures, (taken by herself of course) could represent that she doesn't want to photograph things she is just seeing, but maybe of things she is living. Like her being in that photography says something; it stand out, it says she was alive, she was living and she was there.

Her work seems to have a different concept to most work. I like that fact that she is different, that she includes herself in her art. Sometimes it is not the objects, but the person themselves that is the art.

Computer Experiments

Shape Studio Work Diary

On tuesdays lesson we were asked to bring in something to photograph in the studio. I cose to bring in a giraffe tedddy bear. I found it easier to take better photos being able to manipuate the positioning, lighting ect..

I like this photo

I like this photo because the shape is irregular. You can clearly see different types of shapes on the giraffe, I also manipulated th giraffe to make it look like it has some sort of flowers in its hands. Again adding more shapes. I alos like the fact the the colours stand out well against the neutral table and background. I thik the focus is good, i also like the there are shadows because it makes the while picture look a little less artificial.

I did not like this photo

I tried to create an effect as if the giraffe was hiding under the tree or using it for shade or something. however the tree was too small and came out covering the giraffes face. I also dont like that you can slightly see my finger on the left of the giraffe. I would like to experiment more next time.

Progression

Next time if given the opportunity i would like to be able to manipulate the object freely, i would consider bringing in a different object and using different lighting so i can get a mix of contrasted colours. I would also like to use for focused angles shots.
Here are some things i would like to do next time:

Tone Studio Work Diary

We were given the opportunity to shoot in the studio. We were asked to bring in any object to to shoot. i decided to bring in a bracelet I have had since I was eight years old. I had multiple attempts at this, some came out a little blurry due to the close proximity so i decided to step back but zoom in.
The colours of the bracelet look bright and and shiny.

This photo i liked

This photo is my preferred one, I like the angle it was taken at and the way the flash bounces off of the silver, yet the gold and white tones balance it out. The shadow casted creates heavier look, it shows the shade and possibility of different effects with the correct lighting.

This photo i did not like

As you can see the photo didn't come out very good, I know it was too close and the focus was on the back of the bracelet rather than the front.

Progression

Next time to i prove for the studio photos i think i will try and manipulate the jewelry to cast cool shadow effects.I will also try take photos from more angles. The photos below are some photos that I liked for improvement inspiration.
