Portraiture Location Work Dary

In todays lesson we were asked to take another shoot of portraiture, however this time it was Location.
We went around campus finding some places that would look as good backgrounds.
I like taking portraiture photographs since I enjoy capturing peoples raw emotions, or even faked. Portraiture is a theme of human photography and thus being my favourite type of photography.

Here is a photo I liked:

I like this photo because It seems as if the girl Is almost smiling but not quite. Her eyes are directed straight into the camera giving it the effect that she is looking you straight in the eyes. I think the photo shows an underlying quirkiness; it shows a girl trying to be serious but evidently finding the situation funny.

I do not like this photo:

I do not like this photo because I feel like it is lacking in any significant emotion or focus. I think the centre point if the image is her nose which isn't a bodily part that displays anything worth mentioning. I think the photo would be better if the camera was a little more keel with her head, however, since the girl was a lot taller than me it was difficult to get the heigh and levels right.

Progression

Next time I think I would like to stick to a themed background with a lot of different people to vary. I would like to do it with a field in the background, however, I would like to do it with other people busy in the background - not just a clean cut image. I would also like to change the way most of my expressions are in the photos. I would like to do it naturally rather than telling the person; making hem laugh, telling them an in depth story, capturing them when they don't even realise.

Here is are some examples:

This is my step-by-step editing of a portraiture photography and the final effect.

Portraiture Research

Annie Leibovitz is a photographer who has worked with many of celebrities and winey shoots. Born in 1949, Annie had a job for Rolling Stones magazine in 1970. She then later in 1983 began working for Vanity Fair. Leibovitz started to work for high profile advertising campaigns. From the 90's to this present day she remains publishing and exhibiting her work.

Annie Leibovitz is considered Americas best portrait photographer. She published a book called 'Women' in 1999. Following the title she presented various photos from the Supreme Court Justices of women. Also farmers, coal miners and Vegas showgirls. Leibovitz has currently got her original prints housed in various galleries.

Leibovitz was very passionate about her photography, it is evidenced in some the of her famous quotes:

'A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.'

'The camera makes you forget you're there. It's not like you are hiding but you forget, you are just looking so much.'

'I wish that all of nature's magnificence, the emotion of the land, the living energy of place could be photographed.'

Here is some work of hers:

This is the cover from Les Miserables.
This is one of the most famous actresses; Angelina Jolie.
This is Taylor Swift doing a disney photoshoot.
However, Annie Leibovitz portrait photography is very different from another famous photographer called Alec Soth.

Alec Soth is an American photographer who made large scale projects featuring the midwest.Alec is known for having Folkfore in or behind his work (traditions/stories.) The New York times said that he has made a 'photographic career out of finding chemistry with strangers.'
Most commonly Alec's work tends to focus on off beat, hauntingly banal images of modern America.
So whilst Leibovitz focuses more on women, and for higher status people, Soth focuses on natural, abstract photos.

Portraiture Work Diary

In todays lesson, we were given the task to take portrait photos. I found this lesson quite fun since my favourite type of photography is juan photography. We used Fstop 8 and 13, ISO 200 and shutter speed was at 1/125 of a second.

It was hard to find the absolute best lighting and to also get the exact emotion to be portrayed. However It was easier when I used my friend  because we are comfortable with each other.

Here is a photo I liked

I really like this photo because I think it shows a lot of personality and playfulness. You can clearly see her emotions; she is happy, having fun. This portrait shot was from the hips and up, although it didn't quite get her hips in the photo it is still valid. I think the photo conveys happiness very well.

I did not like this photo

I didn't like tho photo because it was in the middle of a conversation. My friend was not consciously aware of her actions, whilst it had the potential to be good photo it came out not as good. However, her emotions are displayed quite well. She looks as if someone has just said something she doesn't agree with or finds stupid.

Here are some edited photos:

I like this photo because, I feel like the photo shows a little bit of  femininity. The mans body language from shoulders down looks reserved and shy, however his face looks bold and masked.

This photo is good because the women looks like she belongs to her surroundings. She doesn't look perfect but she looks home.
I like this photo because I think the contrast between the womans outlining figure and hair to the spaces of skin. The contrast and negative space allows her features to be prominent.
I really like this photo because sit shows the mood really well. You can see that the boy is laughing hard. It make me feel happier myself.

I really like this photo because it feels all natural. The girl is bare but it doesn't look proactive, it looks natural. She is baring her skin to the photographer whilst she still looks proud and intimidating.  She looks comfortable in her own skin.

Portraiture Definition

Joiners Work Diary

In this lesson we were given the task to create a joiner. I find the concept of joiners very interesting. I think it is beautiful way to express yourself and/or create slash manipulate objects. We perceive things as one thing, however evidently, we can manipulate faces to create a seemingly normal face. I find it fascinating  that we can put together different images and it pass as one thing.

We were given the opportunity to take multiple photos of a portrait to make our own joiner.
Here are some examples of the photo I took:

These photos give me the perfect opportunity to manipulate facial features. I like the first one a lot because she is semi smiling. She looks naturally beautiful. The second I also like because you can clearly see her looking straight but out of focus.

Here is the final piece:

Progression

Next time I think I would take more photos so that I could make the joiner wider rather than having to overlap closeups as it distorts the face creating a funny effect.
I would also like to take more varied angle photos, it may be nice to have a background rather than just a plain one. However with the plain background it did make it easier to blend the two side facing pictures.

I like this photo because it a mash of photos forming a living room or kitchen. It inspires e to create a different illsuion.

I also like this photo because it reminds me of being near a school or somewhere private. It seems like a peaceful place to be.

This photo creates a sympathetic yet amazed aura. I feel sad because the lady is obviously old, meaning her life is near enough coming to a close. However it is so intriguing seeing how we can manipulate faces.

The girl in the picture draw you in. She is beautiful whilst remanning innocent. I love the way the sides of her face have been blended together too make up a ill face yet it isn't.
I like this photo because the Landscape/ scenery matches the colour of the car. The whole image blends well together and it is easy to recognise what the image is suppose to be.
Again I like this image because it shows nature really well. I like the distorted look. I think it shows a good representation of what we are capable of. Of how much power humans hold over how we perceive things anyhow things will be.

I also really like this photo because I feel like it shows tranquility and gives me a ferruling of peace. The photo is naturally beautiful. It has been manipulated to be even more so however.

Joiners Definition

Joiners, is a photographictechnique in which one picture is assembled from several overlapping photographs. This can be done manually with prints or by using digital image editing software.

Here are some examples:

David Hockney is born in Bradford, Yorkshire, on 9 July, the son of Kenneth and Laura Hockney and
the fourth of five children (Paul, Philip, Margaret, David and John).
Studies at Bradford School of Art,
In the early 1980s, Hockney began to produce photo collages which he called "joiners", first using Polaroid prints and subsequently 35mm, commercially processed colour prints. Using polaroid snaps or photolab-prints of a single subject, Hockney arranged a patchwork to make a composite image.[ An early photomontage was of his mother. Because the photographs are taken from different perspectives and at slightly different times, the result is work that has an affinity with cubism, one of Hockney's major aims—discussing the way human vision works.

Depth Work Diary

In todays lesson we carried on with  depth. We had the opportunity to go into town instead of staying in the studio & take some photos.
I found it hard to find things around that had any meaning of depth to me personally, or that ha depth within itself. However I managed to find a few things that I liked.

Here is a photo I liked

I really like this photo because you can see the cracks in the road. You can see the turmoil and ups and downs. You can see different components that make up the ground we walk on.

Here is the edited photo of this.

My edited version has the theme of blue specks and blue blurred backgrounds.

Here is a photo I did not like.

I do not like this photo because the view seems dull and unappealing. I also do not like it because you cans ee the flash reflection in the automatic doors.

Whilst doing depth, as I mentioned earlier, you can find depth in something personal to you. Something, or in this case someone personal to me was with me whilst taking photos. A friend of mine was taking a photo of something and whilst I watched her do this, I thought she looked naturally in her set. So I took  candid photo - this was suppose to be just for her but then I found that I actually quite liked them. I then had the idea of the quote "A masterpiece taking a photo of art." I decided that if I could, I would photoshop her into seemingly taking a photo of art or something aesthetically pleasing. Here are my results:

This first one, I photoshopped my friend into sitting at the end of the pier taking a photo of the sun or water. I liked the idea but it was harder to put into real life. I think it would be better if she blended in a little more.

This was another attempt at placing her inside a temple sort of building I think it works quite well, it genuinely looks like she is sitting down, however I think her body proportion needed to have been a little bigger.

Lastly, this is the same as above, however I noticed after that the shadows caste would have put her shadow on the ground also. So I manipulated the figure into looking dark and washed into the ground, It was hard trying to find where the shadow would actually have been caste, however I think it turned out okay. I would have liked the shadow to be blank with no detail but that was hard to do.
